In the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, I feel that Dally's death was sadder than Johnny's. Johnny died a hero, and Dally died a hoodlum. Johnny died peacefully, but Dally died by being shot. Overall, Dally died a worse death than Johnny, so that just makes his death feel sadder than Johnny just dying peacefully. If Dally had also died in the hospital as a hero, I think that maybe Johnny's death would have been sadder, but Dally died the opposite of a hero.
